Cheetahs are the fastest land animals in the world. With their slender bodies and strong, long legs, they can accelerate up to 120 km/h in just a few seconds. Cheetahs are excellent hunters. First they approach their prey cautiously to within a few meters, then they run off at lightning speed at a favorable moment. If the prey changes direction unexpectedly while fleeing, cheetahs simply turn their body in mid-jump. Their flexible spine makes this possible. However, if they are unsuccessful after a few hundred meters, they have to give up. The high speed is so energy-sapping that they can only keep it up for a short distance.
